A Few Words with Kate
A one-sentence description of your music: A soulful country flair with a driven Boston edge.
Finish the sentence, someone will like your music if they like... the style of Sheryl Crow, the drive of Miranda Lambert, the boldness of Alanis Morissette, and the soul of Alicia Keys.
Key career highlight: Being accepted to the songwriting program at Berklee College of Music. Releasing my second album at age 18.
How and when you started making music: I have been singing for as long as I can remember and was 7 when I started piano and singing lessons. At the age of 10, I was singing blues and classic rock songs that my dad listened to. Shortly after, I taught myself guitar, learned a few chords and started writing songs. Some female singer-songwriters like Avril Lavigne and Michelle Branch influenced me. At 15, I started recording my first
original album, which was released a year later. Next, after hearing Lady Antebellumís hit song "Need You Now", I knew my direction
was going to change. Living in New England, any exposure to country music is rare. It was the first time I found what was missing in all
the genres of music I attempted. Country Music instantly inspired me with harmony bands and audacious females singers such as
Miranda Lambert and Gretchen Wilson. My original songs suddenly had a new sound and style to them. They were lyrics with stories to
be told and edgy melodies to be heard. The inspiration for a second album was made.
What makes your music different? My voice has a soulful ambitious sound. My melodies and lyrics have something to say with a motivated drive. The combined elements of country, rock and blues set me apart from other artists.
Convince me to see your next show: I love how songs have the ability to change your mood or say exactly whatís on your mind. When I play live I want the audience to relate to my music just as much as I do.
Why is it important for you to connect with music fans and what do you have to offer them as an artist? Having true fans is an honor and I want to keep them interested in my music. I constantly update my website and enjoy connecting through Twitter and Facebook to keep in touch. I believe music is a soundtrack to life that pumps you up for a great night, mends a broken heart, creates new experiences or is reminiscent of old times. My music is a diary for any girl without a sugar coated pop sound. I have been told I have an old soul and believe many adults, as well as teens, will enjoy my music.
